The Village of Quothquan

About the village

Quothquan is a small village surrounded by dairy farms, in South Lanarkshire lying to the east of Thankerton and south of Libberton. It is part of the parish of Libberton and Quothquan.

Those not working locally, commute to jobs as far afield as Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The Rural Women's Institute meets regularly at the Village Hall. Behind the Village Hall there is a well kept graveyard and the ruins of a tiny chapel,

There is no church in Quothquan itself, but there is a friendly church at Libberton about two miles away.

As you pass through the village, opposite the 'Tin Tabernacle', you will see a phone box, postbox, and, next to the postbox, the Parish Council notice-board.

The village has Broadband  Internet Access and TV reception but no mains drainage or gas.

The nearest railway station is Lanark. There is an infrequent bus service between the village and  Biggar.

Nearby there is a primary school at Libberton and the village is served by the Mobile Library.

The main industry in the area is farming, mostly dairy.

The nearest market town is Biggar which lies on the main road to Edinburgh.

At certain times of the day, the roads are busy with milk lorries going to and from Roadhead Farm the access of which is adjacent to the Village Hall. The road from Quothquan to Biggar is fairly narrow and the ground beside the road can be soft - so be aware that if you leave the tarmac in wet weather you may  get stuck, unless of course you have a four wheel drive.
